This place was paradisal. 80's, no humidity, no crowds, and the sun shone spectacularly. This is our honeymoon, by popular demand. Aloha! You’ll likely be expecting lounging on the beach shots, or plates full of tangerine-coloured sauces and chunks of fish. There was a lot of tropical food, and there was a lot of sitting on the quiet beach at Ka'anapoli, waves curling like ribbons from the neon blue ocean, mountains jutting from the sea at perfect intervals. There was snorkeling with sea turtle…
2010
Post-Christmas post
Christmas came and went in a flurry of tests, extensive flight delays, time with family, laughter and hugs, and it was wonderful. There are bucketloads of moments to share, so I'll resort to my usual summarizing tendencies. Let me present the best of Christmas, 2010. Except, really, the best of Christmas was that it was our first married Christmas. That exciting sense of anticipation didn't stop on December 25th. Each day forward, together, is a gift far better than I will ever deserve. So, here…
I want to be a part of it
From Scotland to Paris to Newark, despite impending storms, we made it a few clouds early enough. Jet-lag plus endless hours transporting in and out of the city to take even more endless tests, and my outlook on New York was dire. Just when the noise and exhaust and chill had officially snuck under my skin and started irritating me, I slid my subway MetroCard through the scanner Walker had just gone through only to read "Insufficient balance". Bummer. And then there was a tap on my back, and …
Inner Romantic
After all those years of flashcard flipping, it turns out I have an inner romantic. Up there with Thoreau. My husband has referred to me as a hippie in moments when I’m jabbering about local food, or when the truth comes out that I like art more than academia. Indulge me as I modulate on a few things things my inner romantic is loving. I'm not even going to local food, promise. Romance(obvious, I know). Two plus months married, and I am still baffled that Walker likes me, let alone loves me. Th…
Czech it out
Most of my life is too organized, a short-coming that often hinders serendipity. So today we let go. We didn't organize every attraction we'd see by the hour. Today was spontaneous. Our ideas remained largely immaterialized and that glorious space left room for surprise. We moseyed on Charles Bridge for a while, gathering sun and listening to Dixieland Internationale, a band of Czechs singing American jazz. I'm sure you know those moments when you suddenly feel flooded with joy. Being on that br…
Boho hobos
Prague is a fairy tale. A photogenic fairytale; we took 351 photos in about 5 hours yesterday. Despite a dense and frightfully frigid fog, the city still looks like it’s party-ready. This place is decked out. Do excuse my summing-up tendencies, but we have so much to show and tell. So, a mile-a-minute, here we go. Squares Namesti, as they are called here, draw the city together like knots. The squares aren't really squares, but squished pentagons and trapezoids. The Old Town Square, which sits b…
I'm turning into a Bratwurst
Or so I feel, and I entirely blame the thick gravies and dense breads. I was just looking at a menu and saw beer-flavored cheese. What? I omitted to mention yesterday that our elaborate breakfast buffet includes mini hot dogs. Lovely. Well, day 3 in Vienna down, and I have found some threads of continuity to report. Music. Brats. Gold. Music Confession: I have broken out into the hills are alive and Edelweiss, and I'm totally not embarrassed. Vienna also happens to be a classical music haven extr…
Baby, it's cold outside!
Here, there and everywhere, the weather is turning frightful; somehow with Bublé, that sounds magical instead of miserable,so we'll take it. But, baby, it is. I woke up to -2 c degree weather here. Brrr, baby, brrr. Here is back home in Scotland. As they say, huzzah; we’re back! We pushed our door in from the wall of leaves fortified around it yesterday . . . and felt no puff of warmth. For about three minutes I shivered dramatically, and hopped around the apartment on my big toes; the floors w…
Willkommen in Wien!
We arrived Friday night (and this was written Saturday, so sorry for the delay!), and discovered our internet doesn’t work. And so, blog posts will be less frequent than I thought, if ever again. Still, we are crankin’ out the photos, and have loads to show you of this Germanic and sunny (at present) city. Hold onto your horses! Walk and I took turns coming up with three words each to describe Vienna yesterday. My first one was heavy, and Walk quipped with not very friendly. He tried to pull on…
